Why A Human Writer is Better than AI
Companies and individuals are turning to artificial intelligence (AI) for many things, including writing. The idea might be tempting: Tell AI what you want, and it spits a copy for you in seconds. However, AI and copywriting are not all it’s cracked up to be.
Humans are Just Better at Certain Things
According to Michael Bennett of Northeastern University, one of the strengths of human intelligence is its ability to relate to other people’s emotions. This means that humans do better at tasks that require empathy.
Humans also excel in the areas of judgement, intuition, subtle yet effective communication, and imagination. AI just can’t compare in this area.
AI pulls information from the internet. With this, you run a severe risk of plagiarism. You don’t want to be accused of copying someone else when you’re trying to write copy to promote your business. It’s not a very good look to potential and current customers.
Human Learning vs. AI Learning
Humans require fewer samples in order to learn something. AI needs, in Bennet’s words, “copious amounts of samples” in order to train it to perform at the level of a human being.
In other words, you have to train AI to do what you want. That can take time. Time you may not have when running a business or a non-profit.
For this article, I used Chat GPT, a popular AI program, to write a cover letter for me. While it took seconds to produce the letter, I still had to edit it. What is the point of using AI when you have to rewrite everything? I could train it to write exactly what I want it to, but I don’t have that kind of time.
Seven Areas Where Humans Can’t Be Replaced By AI
There are seven areas where humans just can’t be replaced. They are:
- Critical Thinking
- Strategic Thinking
- Creativity
- Empathy and Communications Skills
- Imagination
- Physical Skills
- Technical Know-How
Some of these skills are related to writing. For example, I need to understand a client’s needs and wishes before I even begin writing. I do this by asking questions so the client and I are on the same page. Those involve communication skills.
Another area that pertains to writing is critical thinking. This skill is mostly used in researching information I need to write an article. I use critical thinking skills to judge whether or not a source is reputable and if I should use it.
I use strategic thinking to develop persuasive copy to help sell a product or service. I have to understand who my target audience is and write to them.
Writing is creativity. It is also imagination. While people might think that copywriting or technical writing is dull, writing requires that you flex those creative muscles in order to get the job done. Creativity and imagination are required for brainstorming ideas to write about.
Your Business is Important
Your business is important to you. It is your livelihood. Your customers are your bread and butter. If you turn to AI for your content writing, you’re not going to be happy with the results.
Instead, why not invest in freelance writing services? You will be dealing with a human, whether it’s another freelancer or me. A human who will communicate with you, learn about you and your business and write effectively according to your needs.
